The Pennsylvania Sex Abuse Scandal

This talk is difficult for Fr. Mike to give, but sadly, it is also necessary. Since the Pennsylvania Report was released, practically every headline with the word “Catholic” in it has been about the report, which covers seventy years and gives accounts of three hundred priests who allegedly abused over one thousand minors over. Indignation is not the main message Fr. Mike wants to express here—although he feels that too. More than anything, he wants his viewers to know that now—more than ever—we need to live virtuous and holy lives and become the saints the Church needs.

  1. Yes! Do not LEAVE the church but LEAD …we are all called to be saints ,Thank you Father for your words of encouragement ,God bless.

  2. I just came back to the Catholic community and watching this video grosses me out so much I’m about to walk away and shut the door on the Catholic Church again

  3. Silence is a way of agreeing. You absolutely must speak out about this and condemn it! The Catholic Church seriously lacks emotional intelligence and human understanding if this baffles you as to why you should speak out. My goodness! Go to a professional psychiatrist therapist someone who specializes in trauma and they can explain to you on a professional level why you must speak out

  4. Matthew 7:15-16 – "Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves. Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles?"

  5. I think the problem is the cover-up, but the Catholic Church is not alone, however, many put great trust in the Catholic Church, a trust far greater than other denominations.

  6. oh my my young friend he listens to you your not doing it in the right way you werent there like he says but its gone but at 61 seeing how you do this to kids its what virtual

  7. Thank you for saying this. It means a lot coming from a priest. God bless you. Jesus intercede for us, we beg you to keep our children safe. Jesus, thank you for saving me and teaching me how to forgive those who harmed my body as a child. I love you Jesus and I thank you for all the love you have given me. Thank you for healing me and sending Fr Mike to give us a message of hope.

  8. This video is absolute garbage. It is nothing but double talk and baloney. I wish that it were more sincere rather than focusing on how he didn't want to speak up, because it could have impacted him personally. He was willing to speak out after the fact, but now when it mattered. Terrible

  9. I don’t let the wolf in sheep’s clothing fool me. Priests are not God. I don’t worship them but respect as Jesus gave them authority to guide us. I go to church because God invited me. Anyway, it is always blessing to find great priests like you, Fr Mike! God bless you all!

  10. I understand there are so many good catholics, and I use to be very religious, but the amount of abuse in the church vs not is shocking. I don't know how to solve it but I am glad I am far away from it

  11. rape family sexual relationship genocide white skin chriistianity culture normal l request don't travel westerns countries 😠😠😠😠

  12. But it may change this evil if you do something, you are excusing this evil, not only that, these priests are doing to the very children of your church members, not just that what happens to kids in Canada, under the care of the Catholic, in the past, found in mass grave, in Ireland, history not good, too many to indicate that God is not there, I can't understand, why hold on to a lie, when you give your heart to Jesus, some Christians churches teaches false Biblical truth too, the bible was written foe everyone, for rich, or poor, educated or uneducated, for any human being under the sun, most Bible is been corrupted, you safest bet will be the KJV,

The bible is calling people out of Catholic faith, because of false teaching , now you are giving false hope of sainthood, that is a lie,, you don't give righteousness to people, God give righteousness by faith in Jesus Christ, and idolatry worship God hate, behind those idol are demons, please go and read a KJV bible to know the truth, Jesus is coming soon, save yourself and your families, all that talk was nothing biblical, so sad,

  13. Even without the context of the abuse scandal. Straight forward to the point direct, many people leave because they feel powerless in both catholic and Christian churches. But those negative feelings come with them… it's not the religion or the church it's you. Not taking action rather then face the problem they retreat thats human nature… lead the church don't leave… that's powerful advice. That's wisdom.

  14. 7:15 Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves. 7:16 Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles? 7:17 Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit.

  15. Fr. Schmidts, It's not only kids that have been affected. I heard a programme a little while ago (2 weeks?) in which there was a growing number of nuns joining the "Me too" movement. One was explaining how nuns are groomed by the church to be docile, servile and discreet, so they are ripe pickings for any priest who wants to mess with them. She was saying how one of the priests would abuse her so regularly that it became routine. She would be serving him by ironing his shirts etc – then he would abuse her sexually – but she said there were plenty others too.

I just did a YouTube search for "nuns abused by priests", and there are lots of videos, some having been abused and others having abused other people. Some of the headings are …

Abused nuns reveal stories of rape, forced abortions
Nuns Sexually Abused These Women For Years. Now Survivors Speak Out.
Unforgivable | The priest sex abuse scandal in the Catholic Church
Megan Peterson Goes Public About Being Raped By A Priest (!)

I think the whole sex abuse scandal in the church hangs on 3 things –

    1. Priests and nuns are human beings, with human desires and failings, but their relations to children are not goverened by the love that a parent feels for their own children.

    2. They have no sexual outlet, as they are not allowed to marry and maintain their religious status in the church. In other words, they are unable to lead the life prescribed by nature – to love a partner, to have children and feel the love for them that is so natural to parents.

    3. The secrecy of the confessional. Although the confessor may hear confessions of unacceptable behaviour, he has vowed not to reveal anything he hears in the confessional. A Catholic can do anything, then he can go to confession, say a few Hail Mary's, and hey presto – all is forgiven. He will never be held to account, because he has an absolute guarantee that his confessor will not tell anybody. It's a system designed to engender corruption.

Personally, I went to a Salesian boarding school for 6 years, and during my stay, I never heard of any boy being meddled with by the staff. It's so easy to get the impression these days that every priest is a rapist or a "kiddie fiddler" – and some are – but not the ones I was taught by, and with whom I had a close relationship.

  16. This is very well said I was sexually assaulted by a father figure who didn’t believe in God for a long time and he did that to me about 3-4 years into getting closer to the church for a few months I blamed God and I thought I was LGBTQ+ but following the moment when I told I got even closer to God and realized that for me it was just my trauma that made me believe I was LGBTQ+ but I did not leave my faith if anything I grew closer to it

  17. The Church helped bring it upon themselves. Celibacy is not a normal, human ability. It’s too strong and these restrictions will cause problems. Just like this. I have so much sympathy for the victims. It’s hurts my heart.

  18. Why is this guy stumbling and bumbling. Trying to cover up catholic scams. Cathlotic is a false religious. Christian is the way the life NOT CATHOLIC

  19. Tip of the iceberg. Its been said by martin Luther and others about the church.yet you dont handle the truth and condemn Luther personally. That a reaction when you stand for truth, they attack you personally.

  20. Just found this video. I’ve seen Fr Mike in any videos and I can say your a good man who is genuinely broken hearted over this. I’m a retired police detective and I’ve invested many child abusing cases, I can see true hurt in you Father. These cases are so heart breaking while also enraging. It disgusts me every time. The man wants to rip the perp apart but I know that’s not what Jesus would have done so every time I had to rein myself in and take a deep breath and give that side to Jesus. Thank you Fr Mike for all you do. God bless you.

  21. Three years after this video, and we have had, among many other incidents, a major scandal at the North American College in Rome — the school that makes bishops. I think Father is by nature and grace such a good and holy man that he was incapable of seeing things that were there all the time. Predators know who and who not to target.

  22. Hey Fr. Mike. Great video. However I do feel as though certain "Catholics" pick and choose what issues to focus on. I went to a Catholic school. I would say about 500 times a year something was mentioned or we did an activity based on "pro-life". Never in all of 11 years at a catholic School did they ever bring up something about this. Even when we were in 8th grade, they would never even mention the cover ups that happened or anything related to abuse in the Church. I don't understand why they wouldn't. They would always talk in detail about the horrors of abortion. And while I feel that is important, why is it that that is the only thing they talk about. The reason I put pro life in quotes was because, they don't seem to be pro life. Whenever I bring this up to another Catholic, they play it down so much. I feel like I'm alone on this. Another example would be racism or gun violence. How can a Catholic say they are "pro-life" but not care about any of these issues. They even say that racism doesn't exist or gun violence is normal. I remember there was this conversation I was having with my social studies teacher. He was saying that we should kill all illegal immigrants who are crossing the border. I just felt so confused and I was just so shocked and I didn't understand how someone could say that. I though pro life meant that they are supposed to respect life in all stages, all nationalites, color, sexuality everywhere. Or there was a few students who I was talking to who said that if there child came out as LGBTQ that they would kill them. That they would kill their own child. I am still so confused, because Catholicisim is important to me but how am I supposed to be Catholic if this is what I am exposed to? I hope that this isn't actually what the Church thinks. Even priests find someway to always incorporate politics into their homilies. I understand sometimes but it seems so constant.(Sorry that this is three years late but I needed to say this.)

  23. You don't understand the Catholic sex scandal?? Give me a break. You probably knew but just looked the other way.

  24. But this problem is endemic to the Catholic Church. There have been 216,000 documented victims of sexual abuse by Catholic priests since 1950, Father. The Church has paid $3 billion in legal settlements. I don't want to know you are as angry as me, I want you to do everything in your power to ensure that these people are prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law and endorse the complete repeal and elimination of pontifical secrecy that undermines investigation into these crimes. That is action, the rest is nice rhetoric.
